Kirstine Engell is #morethanJUSTfemale

Nomad hair stylist Kirstine Engell commutes between London, Copenhagen and Berlin, making the entire world her workplace. Styling the hair of models and celebrities for the glossy magazines, we have caught up with her to ask her about the winding road that is her life and career.

How and when did your passion for hair start?

Oh, man, I've always been a social buzzing butterfly. Helping out my hairdesser aunt Anita, from a young age, I got really inspired by all the women's stories that they openly shared from the chair. To this day that's still the best part of my job - "interviewing people".

What do you know now that you wish you had known when you first started out as a hair stylist?

That balance is knowing the difference between working and not working. You can easily lose your identity to work, and life isn't just about that. It's about making sure that you have time for your family, friends, time to really enjoy food that you're eating and chew it and shit! It's the little things.

Where did you find the courage to steer off the straightforward path of your career?

When you feel that madness inside of you, and by madness I mean your passion, you have to follow it. You just have to. No boy can get in the way, no sexy job title, no amount of money can keep you from that pursuit. I also think it's really important to have good relationships. So many people have been so supportive of me, and I'm forever grateful for that. That makes me want to help out whoever needs my help, too.

Where do you find inspiration?

Through sisterhood I connect around the world. Which is why I always encourage the awesome young women i meet to "NOT stress" about doing things the right way. What really matters is that you feel some kind of unstoppable madness inside of you, when you live your life. My life experiences have enabled me to develop the people skills and mental clarity to feel confident in every facet of my business & life. It's really on yourself to figure out how to make your dreams come true. No counselor is going to carve out that path for you honey, especially if you wanna work in the creative industry.

How do you relate to you r passion and work during the current COVID-19 crisis?

I follow the health safety rules by the Danish government, which means I can't travel or work as a hair- and makeup artist at the moment. I thrive on strong female power, so I have started an online community with #coronakarma on my Instagram profile called @meet_my_madness - where I encourage girls around the world to share their corona madness so no one sits isolated at home feeling left alone. Come join us!

Is there anything else that you’re also passionate about at the moment?

Spiritual mindfulness, yoga & especially surfing soothes my wild soul. It's great for the body, mind and soul. I gain strength on all levels - physically and emotionally - and I feel like I've got the stamina to conquer anything in life. You're never too old to try something new that challenges you every day and is so rewarding.

Passion; also known as dedication, as hunger, it is the desire to destroy oneself for one’s art. To tear down, move, or start over in order to rebuild and expand. The feeling of not being able to let go. It is a human condition that most are bound by.

Even though we are JUST human, JUST women, JUST female, we all have that drive that makes us ‘more than’. It is what makes us-, our stories-, and our creations unique. From a job, to a child, to a hobby gone wild, we, and you, are more than JUST female. We have gathered some of the most inspiring Danish women that we know for a talk about passion, creativity, and the balance between worklife and homelife.

Let their inspiring stories, trials and errors be a reminder that we all can struggle, we can fail, but something will always have us return to that same place of passion. And maybe the point is not necessarily to succeed, but to have given it your all, and grown in the process.

Tell us about your passion, struggle, and successes!
